Getting the flow in your essay means that ideas flow smoothly from one part of the essay to the next. If you get the flow right in the essay your reader won’t have to go back and forth in the essay to make sense of what you have written. The flow should reflect how well you have structured the essay and how you have arranged the content of the essay as well as your ideas and thoughts. They fail to improve upon their writing to match the required level required for the complex and tasking analytical essay example that students are prompted for within advanced academic years.

Descriptive and expository essays arrange the information chronologically or by grouping similar ideas together. The chronological method allows the reader to follow the information with a set timeline in their head, such that they can tell what came afterward and before. Grouping similar ideas together is another way to organize the information. This makes the reader recognize similar ideas and differentiate between the different ideas or points of view on the topic easily.
Cohesion means that the writer connects one sentence or idea to the next in the paragraphs. This sentence-level linking allows for the reader to make sense of the text and help themselves see the bigger picture. There are different ways that this can be achieved:


Going from familiar to unfamiliar

When you present to the readers, the information that is new to them, at the start then they might not fully understand the information that follows as they couldn’t follow very well with the initial information.

It’s therefore ideal to start off with information that is familiar to the readers and proceeding from familiar information to the unfamiliar. This way they can place the new information in context to the old one, which is crucial to understanding new information.


Using transitioning

Using transition words such as coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) and subordinating conjunctions (such as, however, even though, etc.) can help you communicate the relationship between different ideas to your reader, though contrasting, appending, comparing, etc. for example.

There are other methods that correct your writing and induce cohesion in it. This involves optimizing clarity in your writing by avoiding the mistakes that writers often make in their writing, mistakes such as:

Unclear pronoun referencing: This can be avoided by splitting the long sentences and adding noun/s to the sentences, to clarify the confusion between the various subjects and the various objects.

Avoiding nominalization: Nominalization is changing the verb into a noun. This leads to long winding sentences that drowns out the main idea of the sentence.
